How does a EGR valve work?
Exhaust Gas Recirculation otherwise called EGR is the method that controls Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems job is to pass back small portions of exhaust gas back to the engines combustion chambers via the intake manifold. This then lowers combustion temperatures and reduces the level of Nitrogen Oxides emitted.
The EGR valve’s job is to control the flow of exhaust gas recirculated. The EGR valve is normally closed and is only opened either by a vacuum or a built-in electric step motor.
One of the common problems a EGR valve encounters is when carbon build up prevents the valve from opening. The symptom may result in noticeable black smoke from the exhaust pipe.
