In line with the governments greener fuel targets and cutting road emissions, the E10 petrol fuel rollout claims it will cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year.

This only applies to petrol vehicles as diesel fuel will not be changing.

The standard (95 octane) petrol grade used across the majority of UK today will soon become E10. In Northern Ireland this will come in to operation in early 2022.

The vast majority of petrol-powered vehicles driven today are able to use E10 petrol. All cars built after 2011 will be compatible.

If your petrol vehicle is before this date and is not compatible with E10 fuel, you will still be able to use E5 by purchasing the ‘super’ grade (97+ octane) petrol. This will be available from most filling stations.

All petrol pumps will clearly be labelled as either E10 or E5.

So what is E10 petrol?

Petrol in the UK currently contains up to 5% renewable ethanol (known as E5). However, E10 petrol contains up to 10% renewable ethanol. This dramatically assists in reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with petrol vehicles and tackles climate change. This will be equivalent to removing 350,000 cars from our roads.

E10 petrol is widely used around the world including Europe, the US and Australia. Since 2016 all new manufactured vehicles have been tested with E10 as the reference point for emissions and performance targets.
